Story of SAW
Born in pune, the founder Sanaya Wagle envisioned this brand from the beginning of her schooling days. She discovered her passion for fashion in 8th std. She always loved sketching and drawing and had a pull towards fabrics and its designs. She is a graduate of fashion from Symbiosis Institute of Design, and got a Special jury award for her degree project from Nivedita Saboo, a well renowned fashion designer. This award was given by the jury members, extempore. The judges loved the project and said these words of praise, “The concept is innovative. The design process of this collection is well thought of, right from the inspiration, the concept, the silhouettes, the cuts and the surface ornamentation. The techniques used in the surface ornamentation is quite unique. The apt selection of music and ambience created enhanced the collection more on the ramp. And this collection definitely has an edge".
SAW, the brand was born in January 2020. SAW specializes mainly in simple and comfortable daily wear kurtas, consisting of Manipuri silk fabric, mal cotton fabrics and also some cotton rayon blends. SAW initially started by participating in small-scale exhibitions in 2020 to create brand awareness and reach out to as many people as possible. This was just before the lockdown struck. The first exhibition SAW participated in was in March 2020 and it was a great success and encouraged her to do more. Further during the lockdown the brand did quite a bit of online sales, mainly from family and friends. At that time people feared going to malls and stores and they preferred to shop online. This worked in favour of SAW.
Covid was a difficult time for everyone and seeing how people from the lower economic group were majorly hit by that, Sanaya really wanted to help out in some way. That’s when she decided to do her bit through SAW to help those in need. They decided to use their brand and existing clientele with the NGO offer wherein people could buy kurtas and they would be directly donated to the NGO that had tie ups with SAW. After the second wave when things started opening up a bit SAW started with participating in the exhibitions again. By this time, the business had grown a bit and people knew about SAW so she decided to buy a stall at one of the famous exhibitions in Pune- Ghe Bharari. Then as the business caught up, SAW expanded to participating in exhibitions in Mumbai where Meenal Mohadikar gave us an opportunity to showcase SAW’s collection. SAW plans to expand to Goa and all over Maharashtra in the coming years.
